Eyeglasses Q & A
What kind of glasses do I need?
People need glasses for a variety of vision issues. If your eye exam shows that your vision needs to be corrected, Dr. Atkinson and the experienced team will provide you with all the information you need to decide what kind of lenses and frames are best for you.
How do I know which lenses are right for me?
We call eyewear “glasses,” but heavy, breakable glass is no longer widely used. Modern lenses come in a variety of materials at varying prices, and you can add features like an anti-reflective coating or colored tint. Types of lenses available include:
Hi-Index
Thin, lightweight lenses designed for higher prescriptions to reduce the “coke-bottle” distortion of standard lenses.
Polycarbonate
Durable plastic lenses that are UV resistant. Good for kids and active people and for sunglasses and certain eye conditions that need extra protection.
Multifocals
Bifocals, trifocals, and progressives make things more comfortable when you have separate prescriptions for daily vision, reading, and driving. Progressives have a smooth transition between each power, so your vision is uninterrupted by a hard line in your lens.
Transition
These automatically darken when exposed to sunlight for UV protection whenever you go outside.
The experienced team at Atkinson Family Eye Care will discuss lens options and answer your questions so you can make the choice that’s right for you.
How do I choose the right frames?
Whether they are bold or understated, frames make an impression. You’re sure to find something that fits your style in the broad selection at Atkinson Family Eye Care:

What kinds of glasses are best for active people and kids?
There are many options to help glasses resist scratching or breaking for active adults and children. If you’re very active you might consider:
- Polycarbonate lenses
- Anti-scratch coatings
- Memory metal frames that can be bent or twisted
Most eyewear comes with a warranty, and Atkinson Family Eye Care offers an additional scratch warranty for lenses.
